Lay summary

We aim to evaluate the performance of these indices, such as white cell count, in the prediction of mortality and to construct a predicting model based on the large cohort study.

 

The background and scientific rationale of the proposed research project in general.

Adequate identification and risk stratification of individuals with deduced life expectancy is an important public health priority and a central issue in clinical decision making. Routine blood test and biochemical examination are commonly used to measure human health status in clinical practice. Previous studies have reported that these biochemical parameters were associated with mortality among the general population. However, the association patterns were diverse across these analytes and their predictive abilities on mortality have rarely been investigated based on a large sample size.

Public health impact

Our study is informative to identify individuals at high risk of premature death. Our results are of importance for management of high risk population and arrangement of limited medical resources.
