Lay summary

In order to improve the health and quality of life for people as they age, we will investigate relationships between genetics, quality of life and survival. As people age, they experience more functional limitations due to osteoarthritis which may necessitate joint replacement. With age, we are more likely to develop conditions including heart disease, cancer, lung disease and diabetes. We plan to investigate the relationships between these factors with genetic variation to expand our understanding of the role of genetics plays in quality of life as we age. Discoveries we make have the potential to help everyone age well. The proposal meets the UK Biobank purpose as it is health-related research and in the public interest as we aim to gain insight to biological predictors that influence healthy aging. We will use genetic markers to scan the genome to find regions associated with traits important for aging such as osteoarthritis, hip and knee replacement, muscle mass, response to post-operative rehabilitation, chronic pain among other traits.
